they are thought to have been first brought to Europe in great numbers from Sri Lanka [Ceylon] by the Dutch East India Company in the 17th Century

It's platinum throughout, and set with eight cut diamonds with the rider finished in purple and white polka dot enamel. The quality is exceptionally good, with a high level of detail and a nice substantial feel.
